School Profile

Toowong is a beautiful historic school tucked away on a quiet suburban hill.

It commands a magnificent view of the city and is a place where the process of education can be carried on without many of the distractions of larger city schools.

Constant care, upgrading and maintenance of the school gardens and grounds gives a neat, welcoming and relaxed appearance.

The school grounds are comfortably large and contain a netball court and playing fields. We have two adventure playgrounds and an environmental area with native trees and bushes.

Toowong State School has a population of approximately 230 children and provides a quality educational experience for students from Prep to Year 7. We pride ourselves on our ability to include, encourage and assist children to succeed. Achievement and participation are acknowledged through individual awards and recognitions, group awards and assemblies.

Our student population is culturally rich and diverse. The family nature of the school environment is collectively supported and encouraged by staff and parents.

Our volunteer team of parents and community members provides enrichment to the educative processes in our school.

Students are actively encourages to participate in decision-making and to raise issues through the student leaders program and through class meetings.

Student Body

Our school population reflects a rich cultural diversity that is celebrated at all levels of our school operations. There are approximately 230 students at the school from a variety of different cultural backgrounds. Many families are visiting Queensland for two or three years for work or to study at the University.

During 2000 our school community prepared for the enrolment of five Deaf children, who entered Year 1 in 2001. The Bi-Lingual/Bi-Cultural Co-enrolment Program was developed from these beginnings and has attracted significant interest among the educational and Deaf communities because of its unique approaches to the education of the deaf.

Prep

Toowong Prep can offer your child five full days of free state Prep education each week. Our centre is a happy well-equipped learning place, staffed by a qualified early childhood teacher and an assistant. We offer a quality learning program, a spacious outdoor play area and a range of exciting resources.

Currently we are accepting enrolments. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Resources and Facilities

Toowong State School was founded in 1880 and has retained much of its original character. All classrooms are single spaces and have different physical attributes, which are designed to enhance teaching and learning. Of particular value at the St Osyth Street site is the prevalence of wide, adaptable and cool verandahs that provide the "interconnectedness" of all school buildings.

Toowong operates a very successful Outside School Hours Care program as well as a very popular Vacation Care Program. These cater to the needs of many families in the community.

The grounds feature three grassed play areas, two play areas covered with Kindy Grass, two tennis courts , a basketball court, two adventure playgrounds, cricket practice nets and a cricket pitch.

The play facilities and areas of the school have been enhanced with the aim always to provide safe, interesting, "child friendly" opportunities which assist children to develop physically, socially and emotionally.

The school activity room is available for hire out of school hours. Contact 3859 6111 for information.

Policy Documents

The Triennial School Review and Strategic Plan

The School Annual Report is a public document that provides the school community with information about the school's progress. It is also a base for the Annual Operational Plan.

Arrival and Departure procedures

The school bell sounds at 8:55 am so that classes can commence at 9:00am.

If children arrive prior to 8:30am they will be seated outside the library until a teacher arrives for duty at this time.

After entering the school grounds in the morning, the children are not allowed out of the grounds without first being signed out at the office by the parents collecting them.

Teachers do not supervise children after 3:10pm so if late children can be collected from the Office.

Parents may not drive into the school grounds to drop off or collect children. This creates a safety hazard especially in wet weather.
